MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Last week, during game 9 against the Honolulu Hammerheads, rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota made NFL history when he became the first rookie to throw four passing touchdowns with zero interceptions. Despite being injured two weeks prior, Mariota threw a walk off touchdown pass in overtime. Mariota’s strong plays helped secure the 200.20 to 151.28 win against the Hammerheads and are now sixth in the league. This was Mariota’s best game of the season to date.
Mariota bounced back from a sprained MCL injury that put him on the bench for two weeks. After the win he said, “I knew
coming into this game that it would be different. My injury was a setback but I come out ready to play and beat the Hammerheads and making NFL history was just something I couldn’t believe.” Mariota threw for 371 yards and four touchdowns after being out for two weeks. The rookie has yet to see numbers like this from this season and Mariota has high hopes of a win in next week’s game against the Virginia Beach Sharks. “There’s nothing more motivating than seeing success come from hard work so I’m just ready to get back out there and take home another win next week.”
Marcus Mariota graduated from the University of Oregon last year and was drafted to the Memphis Blues for the inaugural season. The Memphis Blues organization prides itself on being able to recognize a talent for rookie players. “Being that we’re a new team, we feel it’s only fair to give these rookie’s a fair shot since that’s what Memphis has done for us,” remarked General Manager Colin Hautman.
The Blues will take on first place Virginia Beach Sharks next week on the road in hopes of continuing Mariota’s lucky steak.
