JMU and its School: The James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA) is a state-owned institution, regional, comprehensive, student-oriented institution with an approximate enrollment of 20,000 students,  about one hundred miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The JMU Hart School of Hospitality, Sports and Recreation Management is the leading and new educational institution for hotel, restaurant, and tourism management students in Virginia. The hospitality program at JMU prides itself on being a leading HM/BBA program in the country, currently with fifteen full time faculty and numerous adjuncts serving over 1,000 students majoring in Hospitality Management and majoring in Sport and Recreation Management. The program exists since 1974 as a B.B.A. degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management under the University College of Business. Prior to 2010, it was noticed that both Sport and Recreation Management majors (under de Department of Kinesiology) and Hospitality Management programs offered very similar curricula and were preparing students for similar work sites, under the broad term “Mega-Leisure”. This way, in June of 2010 it was established the new School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management when the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management and Sport and Recreation Management majors was merged. The foundation of this merger was to form a new unit, a “school” independent of, but affiliated with, the College of Business. We take great pride in a tradition of vibrant instruction within an innovative curriculum. In the Spring of 2015 the school received a very generous gift from G.J. and Heather Hart and it will change its name to the Hart School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management during the Fall 2015 semester.
Since the spring of 2018, we are also very excited about the Madison Hotel and conference center, built on the Campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. configured at seven floors and 231 rooms. We are happy to see classes taking place at the hotel and students involved in its daily operations and management; we also strive to see more involvement with our hospitality school and programs.
