Combination archival research, oral history, and field survey. Intern will take collected secondary resource information and analyze historic maps for fort locations. The most promising locations will be selected for primary research. As time allows and per permission of landowners, field survey will be undertaken with Dr. Carole Nash to determine the presence of fort-era features. Knowledgeable local residents will be involved in the project and may contribute to oral history. If this becomes a reality, the project will go to JMU IRB for proper permissions. All students who participate in this project will be strongly encouraged to present their work at local and professional meetings, and efforts will be made to secure funding for registration and travel.
