Grant Folsom’s Portfolio

Hello

My name is Grant Folsom, and I am a SMAD major and a senior. People have always made amazing 3D printing designs, so I figured I’d try to make my own.

Grab Bag Noun: Eyeball

My noun is an eyeball. The creation was not too difficult to do. It was more placing objects inside one another to make it right. I originally wanted to try and make the red veins, only to realize that it would not show up in the print. Since the filament is the same color, I decided to alternate indents and bulges to differentiate the color change of the iris. The print itself is small, but that was intentional to reduce time consumption.

19. Tinkercad rotation box
20. “Press” button

1 of 20 object

I decided to print the camera from the 20 objects.

The only difference from the original is the screen is indented instead of jutting out and the wheel has an “OK” on it. The only this that concerned me was the lens, so I made it bigger and set the bottom on the ground.

Moving Parts

For the moving part print, I went for a pinwheel design.

The first print had a partial failure since the wheel and the handle did not have the same size. I printed the second handle with a slightly smaller base. While the connection is not snug, it can spin.

The wheel itself doesn’t spin well with low winds, so next time the blades should be a steeper angle.

Final Tinkercad Project: Battleship USS North Carolina

I’m currently designing the World War II Battleship North Carolina of the US Navy.

The design of this ship will mostly consist of small details, primarily at the center, also known as the superstructure of the ship.

Based off this image, I’ve focused on the main level and working my way up one level at a time. I have currently finished the main batteries and the secondaries. When I finish the superstructure, I may consider including the famous Bofors turrets that litter the battleship’s exterior.

The finished product does not have fine details, but it includes the main components of the battleship. The difficult part was the central area, witch needed a substantial amount of blacks needed to accurately portray the real ship.

Fusion 360 Ring Project

I designed my ring to fit my pinky. This was my first time using Fusion 360, so the design is primitive.

I originally tried to do a wavy pattern. As you can tell, this ring is beyond saving. Before I decided to make an attempt, I tinkered with the tools available and see what happens. Doing this a second time would be infinitely better since I’m going to have an idea of what I’ll be designing next time.
