Hello
My name is Zane Purcell, I’m a third year majoring in AGIS. I’m a part of JMU SSRT. I’m taking 3D-printing because I’ve always thought it was cool and interesting, and thought this was a great opportunity to learn and get a chance to design and print myself. I work a part time job baking cookies, and spend my free time being lazy as possible. I’m studying abroad in China this summer with my friend Eric, and will be going to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an.
Grab Bag Noun: Toilet
My noun was a toilet. This was my first time truly designing a 3-D model, and I had a ton of fun designing my grab bag noun, and the other 19 objects. I used a paraboloid as the base of the toilet, and connected it to a tube with a torus on top, to represent the toilet seat. I put a half sphere inside the toilet to represent “liquid”, and for the back of the toilet I simply used a box with a round roof on top of it, with a wedge to connect into the base of the toilet in hopes of giving it more support. I also used another small box shape to make a small little toilet handle.
My print ended up being way smaller than I hoped it would be, but it still printed out fine. The only benefit of it being so small was that I didn’t need to bother using structural support due to it being so small.
I had a lot of fun messing around with tinkercad and making different 3D designs. I plan on messing around a lot more with the program and experimenting with different things, and I’m hoping to get a better understanding of the capabilities of the 3D printers.
20 Objects
- Toilet – My grab bag noun
- Hearts – A larger red heart with a smaller gray heart going through the center of it
- My name – I used the text shape to put my name, Zane.
- Hoops – Two hoops interlocked with each other
- House – I made a small house with a roof, door, and two windows.
- Pipes – I used pipes and precisely aligned them into a small square.
- Living Room – I used the premade couch, table, lamp, and plant shapes to make a small living room.
- Stacked squares – I stacked squares on top of eachother, and topped it off with a pointy cone.
- Smiley Face – I used the free drawing tool to draw a little smiley face, and stood it up.
- Spherical – I made a sphere and wrapped it in text that says “Spherical”.
- Dice – I made a single die and put circles on each surface to represent numbers, like a real die.
- Coin Trap – I made a design similar to the coin trap, where I took a cube and used a egg shape to cut out holes throughout the cube.
- Waving robot – I took the waving robot shape, and added on a mustache, hat, and glasses.
- Skeleton – I took the skull, added on a little Beret and some circular frame glasses.
- No Sign – I made a little sign that indicates something is prohibited, like a no smoking sign.
- Grass Block – A little block of grass
- Egg Thing – I took an egg as a base, added chicken feet, rabbit ears, and a scuba mask.
- Bunch of rings – I interconnected a bunch of rings together
- Star Square – I took a cube, made it more flat and used a star to cut out a star print through the center of it.
- Weird Pyramid thing – I took a pyramid, used a sphere to cut out the top of it, and ran a pole up the center that connected into a icosahedron.
20 Objects Printed – Weird Pyramid Thing
Tried printing out a icosahedron and a cone with a tube separately, and connected them together afterwards. I wanted to be able to take it on and off the little pedestal, but its pretty firmly stuck now, and only spins around on the base.
Moving Parts
I designed a windmill with spinning blades. I tried printing it with supports over night at the makery studio in ECL, but it ran out of filament and when I went to grab it before class, they had told me it ran out and I didn’t have enough time to reprint it. I’m going to reprint again, and upload the results here when finished.
The blade turned out well, and only the base of the tower itself ended up printing.

Final Project Idea
I want to make a cross-section of my apartment complex, with an in-depth cross-section of my specific apartment.
