Darren Kubica’s Portfolio

My name is Darren.  Here is a pic of me with the real-life property brothers (not cardboard cutouts I saw at the mall).  I am easy to recognize, just look for the girl with the short red hair.  Fun facts about me: I prefer Dr. Wham Soda to Dr. Pepper, I have my personal trainers license and work as a personal trainer at UREC, and I hope to own a goat farm someday.  I already have a job lined up after I graduate, so I’m not too worried about my after graduation plans.

Grab bag noun

My grab bad noun was House.  I chose not to make a traditional house, but instead make a house for my pet snail.  I breed snails (a weird hobby I am aware) and I wanted something to put in the aquarium.  So I designed a house for them to crawl around in.  The house includes a tube for the snails to crawl through and explore or hide in, as well as a structure for the snails to climb and hang on.

I realized that the structure would likely need supports in order to print properly.  I stayed with the print for two hours to make sure that it printed properly.  I had to pause the print a few times in order to fix the supports, as they tangled a few times and had to be cut off.  Once the supports were behaving and I felt like it would finish properly I left.  The print took a total of 5 hours.

The print had ALOT of supports that I had to remove.  I was able to remove most of them, however, I cracked the structure slightly while doing so.  I will have to be more careful in the future.

With and without most of the supports.  I am having trouble removing the rest of them.

Printing one of the 20 objects

I decided to print the ice-cream cone with a cherry because that seemed like the hardest thing to print because it has round sides, does not have a stable base, and has overhanging parts.

I printed two versions of it.  I printed it standing up and I printed it lying down on its side in order to see what happened.  The lying down version printed rather well while the standing up version failed miserably.

After removing the supports the ice cream turned out well.

Moving parts

(1/22/19)

The first thing I tried to print was a door hinge using a cylinder with cones.

It sorta worked even though it broke when i cracked to move it.  I believe if I print it again slightly bigger and with more stabilization on the hinge part, it will work.  I will try again.  I also think the cone part needs to go deeper into the cylinder.

After trying again with the door slightly hinge slightly thicker the hinge fell off.  I realized this was because since the cone and the hinge are not connected is would tilt.

I fixed this by printing it laying down

I didn’t understand why the hinge had to be made of cones instead if cylinders, So tried it with cylinders.  After several failed attempts and tweaking I finally realized that the printer could not print something that printed at a 90-degree angle.  I will have to use cones in the future.

Final Project draft

For my final project I am making a connect for game with a removable lid.  I have made small test prints that work and function correctly.  All I need to do is print it larger and together and make sure it works
