Carly Chisholm’s Portfolio

Hello

I’m Carly, a junior Graphic Design major with a minor in British Media and Communications. At JMU, I’m involved in ADPI, Kappa Pi, Club Triathlon, and the Love Your Melon crew.

Grab Bag Noun: CAMERA

For my noun, camera, I wanted to create it out of simple shapes. The design was built from two rectangles and two circles, all at different widths and heights to add detail to the camera design. All objects were grouped together at the end to make sure that they fit properly and so I could tell that they worked well together proportionally.

20 Objects

(update: print of another one of the 20 objects)

Objects listed from left to right across each row starting top left

  1. Camera- like I said before, I wanted to build the camera out of as few shapes as possible to make it minimal.
  2. Pointed cone- This was where I was practicing grouping various shapes and working with proportion.
  3. C- I tried out the letters that the website offered.
  4. Mountains- I liked what we saw in class, so I tried to create mountains with varying peaks.
  5. Swirl- I experimented with the drawing option where you could create your own element.
  6. Balance- Here I was attempting to group varying shapes again and place them on top of one another.
  7. Cake- Again, I was practicing grouping and in this object I grouped three cylinders to make a tiered cake.
  8. House- This is where I started learning how to stack the objects when grouping them.
  9. Circle- I worked with the drawing tool again and drew a line going in circles inward.
  10. Chain- I took two of the same shapes from what was offered and linked them together so they looked like a chain link.
  11. Star- I started thinking of making stamps so I joined a star with a flattened box to make a stamp.
  12. Shades on a Box- I found the characters and decided to place the sunglasses on a cube to make it look like the cube was wearing them.
  13. Circle Sunglasses- Like the last object, I tried moving around the sunglasses so it was like the circle wearing them.
  14. Design- I decided to mess with typing words in and putting them on another object. Here I typed “design” and had it curve around the cylinder.
  15. Bottle top- Again, I was experimenting with combining oddly shaped elements.
  16. Heart stamp- I tried grouping more shapes to make a stamp and ended up creating heart stamp.
  17. Cylinder- In this object, I was working on putting objects on top of other objects and proportion.
  18. Snowman- While grouping elements, I chose to stack three spheres to create a simplified concept of a snowman.
  19. Duck feet- I went back to the characters available in the menu and decided to work with more unique objects and grouping/stacking them with other objects.
  20. Mustache- For my last object, I decided to make another stamp out of a mustache raised into a rectangle.

Moving Parts

For my moving parts print, I tried to make a key chain that had movable gears within it. In my first print I messed up by adding supports to the object that the gears went into. That did not end up working because I was unable to insert the gears mid print.

Fusion 20 Objects

For my 20 objects in Fusion, focused on using already-made shapes and figures that Fusion had. In some, I tried to connect the various objects and in others, I tried to see what the shapes could do on their own. Outside of the physical shapes of the objects, I explored different materials and textures to put on the shapes.

Fusion Ring Design

For my first print from fusion, which was the ring assignment, I sized a ring to my finger. After I was done building the ring in fusion (green ring) and sized it, I took the design into Meshmaker and put round indents into it and then reprinted it in the clear plastic.

Final Fusion Project:

For my final fusion project, I am doing a stamp for a company that I am working with in one of my typography classes. The company is Small Beer Brew Co. I first started this project in illustrator and then brought my drawing into fusion to make 3d (extrude). My plan is to use type in fusion to write “Small Beer Brew Co” in 3d as well and then from there, I should be ready to print and stamp the logo.
