Grant’s Fusion 360 Project – Challenge Coin

Progress

I want to make my own challenge coin. Challenge coins are tokens of friendship from military and police units that originated from World War I. I have provided my own photo of a challenge coin that I received as a reference.

360 Progress

I’m making my coin by my experience as a JMU student. I decided to design one side with JMU 2020 to represent my graduation. The other side I plan to design an aperture of a camera and perhaps something sports related because of my experience live streaming JMU varsity sports.

Designing the aperture was difficult, because I needed to make a perfect 360 degree design. I had to go through several designs to figure out how to make it circular. For the final design, I decided to make it non circular and have it concealed by the coin itself.

I sketched the aperture with a 60 degree angle so I can make the shapes create a perfect 360. My technical concern is that I didn’t tinker with the circular lines to add to the iris. I fixed it by placing it inside the coin and removing the edges entirely. With that, I was able to complete the aperture design. I haven’t decided at the moment about what I want to design at the center.

The other side has the JMU letters and the 2020 year. I had to look up the lettering and try to recreate it by scratch. It’s not perfect, but I’m content with how it turned out.

I decided to put the No Symbol on the back, since everything that I usually film is cancelled now. Figured I’d give a little humor to the design, to symbolize how everything is going downhill for the moment.

Final Product

Lastly, I figured I put some color to it. The JMU 2020 side is all Gold, there wasn’t a purple option that I found, so it is all gold. The coin itself is a metallic black. The backside has the aperture with yellow and red for the sign. For some reason, not all the shutters appear colored, but when I color it, another deletes it, so I’m assuming it’s colored.
