Biology Abstract
Ecologists have a lot of information and data on the history of black bears, but there are still some questions ecologists want answered. To better help ecologists understand the pattern of black bear migration bear collars were created. Current bear collars do not possess enough information for ecologists to analyze and study bear behavior. Bear collars now, only retrieve two main data points: location and temperature. While both of these data points are important to have, they do not show how bears get from point A to point B or the activity occurring at each point. Adding accelerometer data to a bear collar will allow ecologists to assess more patterns in Black Bear behavior. The more patterns known can ultimately help our communities’ understanding of bear ecology. Knowing where black bears are migrating and foraging at will help solve modern issues with black bears foraging in neighborhoods and their decrease in population due to habitat destruction.
