First Steps

Street. Between streets a concrete jetty waits patiently for feet to land.  Look ahead for what comes, city buses, cab drivers.  Little brown man in the cart pauses for ladies, their crackling shoes.

Fountain.  Using water to clean water.  Entrance through circuitous flow, bobbing implants.  Preacceleration.  Glowing light scares fish into recessed walls.  Avoiding metal grates aimed to bring them home.  They will be back, some of them, not all will have the pleasure.

Greenhouse.  Her nose traces the ground.  Pulling toward a rabbit or ground squirrel. Instead an elk, siphoned legs from joints rests against a tree base.  Headless. Poaching antlers, a ten point buck.  They sell for a pretty penny.  Her jowls bloodied, not ingesting, just looking. She won’t leave.  Her job protecting.
