Trout

Trout
She’s a nice kid they tell me. A local woman brings her to swimming lessons at the community pool. She jumps off the deck a hundred times, showing off her tricks. Returning her to the cabin, you have to wonder if she will be fed. She slides into a shallow part of the river, an occasional trout slips by. She knows how to trap the skittish creatures, pin them against a rock, building a basket with her hands. Greasy brown water squelches through latticed fingers, she traps one, pulls it up by the tail.
