Our latest version of a minimum viable product uses an updated scoring method to evenly weight a set of indicators. To more clearly showcase our method and sources for this round of a proof of concept, we have narrowed our focus to one JSP goal. Goal one made sense based on the prospective ease of operationalizing its subgoals.

Using goal one: Security at Home and Abroad, we selected outputs from well-respected governance indices for the year 2017. We chose this year because it was the most recent year for which all our indices had free available data. We chose these indices based on their conceptual alignment with various subgoals of goal one. The indices were either on a 1-10 or 1-100 scale, so we set them all to a 1-10 scale and took complements where necessary to ensure consistent directionality of measures. Then, we equalized each index using the formula:

x*(1/n)
n=total number of indices
x=index scores

We then added up across indexes for each country.

Subgoals:

Indices used and proposed corresponding subgoals :
Fragile States Index C1: Security Apparatus (S1, S2)
Fragile States Index: Legitimacy of Government (S3, S1)
Fragile States Index P3: Human Rights and Rule of Law (S3, S4
Fragile States Index S2: Refugees and IDPs (S2, S4)
Corruption Perception Index (S1:S4)
In the future, we hope to diversify the indexes and incorporate a second JSP goal.
