This week, we took a little trip to Mercato Centrale! This was a very unique experience as it was very different than your normal local grocery store. It offered a lot more variety in terms of food, and the food in this market was a lot more fresh and unique, with delis, bakeries, a variety of pastas, vegetables, vending machines, flowers etc. They had everything from meats, to fruits and vegetables, and dairy. Everything around me was very colorful, and it looked like an accentuated version of a farmers market. It was similar to street vendors since there was a lot of variety, but different because it had a permanent build-up structure. The most unique thing I saw has to be the chicken. I had never seen it skinned with the head like that. Though it looked fresh, it was a little scary to see and I could not imagine myself buying it, it would make me too aware of what I was eating. Overall, I think this market was important to visit for class because it shows how an an authentic Italian grocery store/market is. I would say that it’s a lot more different than any grocery store that you’d find back in the states.
