As I’ve tasted more foods from both Florence and Naples, I can definitely say I’ve come across some notable differences between the styles of the food from both regions. One key difference I noticed is that it’s much more common to find seafood in much of the cuisine in Naples than in Florence. Definitely not surprising being a seaside city. While I was in Naples I had the opportunity to eat at a restaurant that only served seafood with its dishes, which is something I haven’t seen in Florence. At that particular restaurant I ordered a seafood pasta dish, which came with a medley of mussels, octopus, and various other seafood. I’m not normally a huge fan of seafood, but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. I thought that the seafood tasted light and fresh, and was very enjoyable with the pasta. In terms of textural differences, I would say that fried food is much more common in Naples than in Florence. On the academic excursion in Naples I tried some of the popular street foods from the region; most of which were fried in some way. Fried dough, potatoes, cheese, and even pizza are common items that I came across while I was exploring the city.
Some other honorable mentions of foods I’ve had this week are gelato from La Carraia, a lovely Indian cuisine dinner, some homemade pasta, and a cheesecake from Mama’s bakery.
