Caramel cappuccino I picked up at my new favorite caffe on my way to Italian class. I found this gem on the way back from the gym this week and have gone to get coffee everyday since. It’s called Caffe Santo Spirito and it has a very quite non-tourist atmosphere which I really enjoy.
Complimentary limoncello shots to finish off our meal for Kathryn’s Birthday. I honestly enjoyed my first experience with limoncello. It was a great conclusion to our meal we enjoyed together.
Here is the only pizza I have had the pleasure to enjoy since arriving to Florence (Besides the first night). It was a pairing I wasn’t expecting to be found on a pizza but it was really pleasant. The base was a traditional white pizza and the toppings included mortadella, burrata, and pistachios. I haven’t been able to enjoy much pizza since arriving but I can say that I have noticed that the style here is very thin, all have been made in a wood burning oven (from the places I’ve seen) and the toppings are different to what you would find in the United States. Browsing the menu and looking at the different combos the bases of the pizza remain the same, either red or white and then different toppings are added. The topping combos are not what you would typically see like mine, which was a cold cut and pistachios. Another difference I’ve noticed is that they make only one size of pizza and it usually is to serve one person, and if you don’t want a whole personal pizza some places sell by the slice.
A quick lunch break at caffe Santo Spirito with Kathryn for her birthday. We both enjoyed an espresso martini, which definitely did not pair well with my sandwich, which was a tuna with tomato and mayo.
I did not get to enjoy this sandwich but I did snap a quick picture because it was a little bit of home here in Italy. Pennsylvania is really represented here as they refer to cream cheese as Philadelphia.
A little study date with Erin and Kathryn that featured my first experience with homemade pasta here. This was just classic spaghetti with a tomato sauce and topped with burrata and fresh basil.
Another taste of home I got to experience this week was arancini or what I call a rice ball. When I saw this at one of the local bakeries I just had to try it. It was so good but I don’t think it tops my Nonno’s.
My first taste of gelato here was at Sbrino. I’ve had it three times since. My favorite flavor is the speculoos, which tastes just like a biscoff cookie.
I got to experience my first ever schiacciata sandwich from gusto bar. Kathryn, Erin, Ryan and I ate them outside Palazzo Pitti.
My first ever cappuccino in Italy. The foam was immaculate and the espresso was amazing. I’m not sure how I’ll ever be able to go back to having coffee in the U.S.
