John Scherpereel

Professor of Political Science

John Scherpereel is Professor of Political Science and Coordinator of the Modern European Studies minor at James Madison University. His research focuses on European politics, the relationship between politics and administration, political representation, the dynamics of territorial governance, and political science pedagogy. He oversees various aspects of the Commission Under the Microscope project, including conceptualization; data acquisition, processing, and analysis; and communication of results.

Kevin hegg

Head of Digital Projects, Administrative Faculty

Kevin has worked at JMU for 28 years in various technology positions within JMU Libraries. His experience spans a wide variety of technology work, from managing computer labs and server hardware to developing a large open-source software project used by hundreds of universities. Most recently, He managed a small group of programmers and IT professionals who provisioned and managed the campus LMS, WordPress, Omeka, and other instructional systems. His current interests include text and data mining, analysis, and visualization.

Ava Galyen

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Ava is pursuing a degree in Interntional Affairs with a minor in Modern European Studies. She assists with the data collection, data organization, and visualization design. Ava intends to pursue a career with a government agency and to focus on diplomacy and  national security. 

Ben is a student majoring in Political Science and Philosophy at James Madison University. In this project, he assists with data processing, website integration, and incorporation of AI into the social sciences. Ben is interested in furthering his studies and career in the realms of politics and ethics.

Carter DixON

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Carter is a student majoring in Information Technology at James Madison University. In this project, Carter focuses on collecting, processing, and performing data analysis, with a focus on machine learning. He is currently working on several research initiatives, notably a project utilizing AI to develop a stock market simulator for market analysis and trend prediction. Carter is focused on pursuing a career in data analytics, with a particular interest in financial fields and cybersecurity.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Alida is a student majoring in International Affairs at James Madison University. In this project, Alida focuses on data collection, preliminary  analysis, and the development of theoretical frameworks, applying her concentration in Modern European Studies. She has presented research at the 20th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union and the JMU MadRush Undergraduate Research Conference. Alida aims to advance her education and career within the field of international development.
