When shining a light through a window, one can open and close the blinds to blink out Morse code. Even if the message is misunderstood, we can still see the light blinking. Similarly, our radios work like Morse code by blinking light at the quad-copter, so it can move accordingly. But there is light that we cannot see due to the pitch being too high or too low. To combat this, the radios send signals at different speeds to connect with one specific UAV.
A certain area of effectiveness resembling a “doughnut” surrounds the middle of the antennae on the drones. By using double antennae, the signal areas overlap to make a full sphere of effectiveness with no blind spots.
The most modern radios work by having a set speed they send and receive signals, so if the signal is dropped, then a backup would start up immediately. To be safe though, we discussed the distance we should be from cell towers to avoid them having a significant effect on the drone, which could make flying dangerous.
