Brexit

On June 23, 2016, a narrow majority of voters in the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union (EU). A year and a half later, the United Kingdom and the EU are negotiating the terms of “Brexit,” and debate about its stakes and outcomes continues to rage. Was the road to Brexit democratic? Has it reinforced or undermined democracy?  JMU history professor John J.  Butt, JMU Political Science professor John Scherpereel, and Howard S. Carrier of JMU Libraries & Educational Technologies will explore the implications of Brexit for democracy in Britain, the EU, and beyond.  An open discussion with audience members will follow the presentation.
