DACA, Dreamers, and Denial

The termination of the Dream Act (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants – and the national debate it has generated – presents another chapter in the history of exploitative immigrant policies in the United States. The latest policies should be understood in the context of earlier mass deportation attempts, such as the Bracero Program and Operation Wetback. Daniel Morales of JMU’s History Department, Carlos Alemán of the Communications Studies Department, and Isabel Castillo, a nationally recognized community organizer, reflect on the current national situation, its impact in the Shenandoah Valley, and local efforts toward just immigration policies. An open discussion with audience members will follow the presentation.
