The victory of far-right populist Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential elections has raised fears about democracy in Latin America’s largest country. JMU political science professor Kristin Wylie will discuss Brazil’s elections, including debates about race, class, gender, and sexuality; the 2016 impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, the country’s first woman president; the recent assassination of a popular black, lesbian city councilor from Rio de Janeiro; and the broad mobilization of women in response to a Bolsonaro presidency. An open discussion with audience members, including parallels with the United States, will follow the presentation.
