Is America Today like Germany in 1933?

During the recent presidential election and in the weeks since, prominent historians and political commentators have repeatedly compared the situation in the United States to interwar Germany and the Nazi rise to power, identifying a collapse of democratic norms and a rise in illiberal trends. Is this a fair comparison or is it paranoia? Michael Gubser and Christian Davis, professors of German and European history at JMU, will review the public debate surrounding this comparison and evaluate its legitimacy and implications. Their brief presentation will be followed by an open discussion in which all audience members are encouraged to participate.
