Since coming to power in Russia in 2000, Vladimir Putin has repressed opposition to his rule, silenced those challenging his authority, gained control over Russian media, and disseminated propaganda to assure his popularity. He has, in other words, used his power to destroy Russian democracy. After declaring the demise of the Soviet Union “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century,” he has successfully reasserted Russia’s international influence through wars in Georgia and Ukraine, the annexation of the Crimea, and fighting in Syria. He has also intervened in American and European elections. Dr.Mary Louise Loe, Professor Emerita of Russian History, will explain Putin’s rise and the danger he poses to world peace. Her presentation will be followed by an open discussion in which audience members from all political viewpoints are encouraged to participate.
