  1. The Scene Behind Turtle Quest (Digital Storytelling)

Conceptual core

After watching the video I understand what the creator is trying to get at. This person is an environmentalist who cares about all aspects of nature. She made this multimedia project because she wants to get rid of plastic straws as they are killing sea life especially turtles. Creator of this project is trying to get her point across that she wants to get rid of plastic straws and other plastics as they are thrown into the ocean everyday and sea life including turtles are injuring themselves and are dying due to the disposal of plastic straws in the ocean. It is very clear what the creator of this project wants; and that is for there to be a substitute in plastic straws. She made her own straws made of sugar cane that will in put any sea life in danger when these straws are thrown away into the ocean. She wants to slow down or even better eliminate pollution in the ocean as a whole.

Research competence

There was a lot that went into making this project. For instance, the creator of this traveled to Maldives, an island/country located in the Indian Ocean, to capture footage of sea life and show what disposing of plastic in the ocean is doing to them. There were many facts and statistics that went in to making this project to understand the severity of this problem. There were many pictures and videos that were in this project as you were able to truly connect with what the creator of this project wanted for the environment. There was a video included in the project that was hard to watch as it was a plastic straw lodged into the nostril of sea turtle and showed people trying to get it out. There was a lot of volume and quality that went into this project as the creator included a lot that would help her case in which she is trying to get at; and that is eliminate plastic straws from being polluted into the ocean.

Creative realization and innovation

The vision of this project is very clearly seen as the person who made it wants change. She made it very clear that plastic straws are endangering not just turtles but all marine and island animals. Included in the project were many pictures and videos that showed plastic waste in the ocean and she mentioned how she wanted to change that. With the videos and pictures they achieve effects that 100% could not be achieved on paper because you get to see what it actually is like instead of trying to visualize it in your head while reading about it. The videos and pictures make you feel different about the whole situation as you can see it and see that turtles and other animals struggle from this problem of pollution of plastic straws and other plastics and garbage being thrown away in the ocean. By seeing what it actually looks like it strikes you with more emotions of how these animals are actually suffering.

Relationship between form and content

The thesis of the project and the design of the project both fit together in a way that works very well. With this thesis and using this design of the project it works very well together because you can see what is actually going on as opposed if it were a paper or any other type of design. Giving examples in videos and pictures is the best way to connect to someone as they will be fully engaged with what is being talked about in the project.

2. Waiting 11 Years to Be Adopted (Podcast)

Conceptual core

There was a lot of emotion in this project from the person speaking. The strength and clarity of her thesis I thought was easy to understand and that is it is okay to wait for things because in the end it will all turn out good. In the podcast she always thought it was her fault for not being adopted but later she found out sh had not been adopted yet was due to her biological sisters problems that were arising. She learned that eventually and realized that was the reason she had to wait 11 years to get adopted and find her forever home.

Research competence

There was not much to this that had volume and quality as it was her only explaining her experience and her journey of being adopted. She did have a resource however, her mom who spoke and mentioned the things that happened were not because of her but because of her biological sisters. The resource of having her mother speak made it feel deeper than having the other girl talk about it because with the mother saying it she can express how she felt about the whole thing because it was her going through it.

Creative realization and innovation

The vision of this project was accomplished well. It was clear to understand what the project was intended to do and that was tell a story and come out with a message after it. This project also achieves an effect that could not have been achieved on paper. This is because it is a podcast so the person talking can share as much as she wants using her voice and for viewers to her her emotion and how she felt about all of it instead on reading off of a paper because you would not be able to recognize the tone she is using in a paper.

Relationship between form and content

The fit between the thesis and design of the project works well with one another because using the podcast you are able to let the viewers hear everything you have to say so you can comprehend it more and you can relate to it more and understand more of what the speaker is trying to get across. By using this design for the project you can hear what the speaker and everyone else in the podcast has to say as I think it will hit deeper coming right from the person instead of telling a story reading off of a piece of paper because then you will not be able to connect on a deeper level to it.
