Saturday October, 15 2012: JMU ChemDemo collaborated with JMU’s National Science Teachers’ Association Chapter to do a series of demos for boy scouts at the Stonewall Jackson Area Council’s Camporee at James Madison’s estate, Montpelier. From 9am – 4pm, with hardly a break in between groups, enthusiastic scouts came by the STEM Tent to learn why diet soda floats while regular soda doesn’t, how flames canĀ emit different colors of light, how liquid nitrogen affects an inflated balloon, and how pressure can effect marshmallows. The scout favorite of the day was electrocuting pickles. This event was associated with the Boy Scouts of America’s new STEM initiative.
