I’m Brandon Ellis

I’m a WRTC major with a Sports Communications minor at James Madison University. This class has helped me learn the craft of digital storytelling in the overall concepts of digital storytelling.

My Experience with WRTC 332

Course Objectives

Objective 1: Designing Multimodel Stories using a variety of methods.

The stories that I have worked on over the course of the year have included Instagram interview stories, a digital academic remix story, along messing with photographs to make the story more appear more impactful to the public.

The Remix assignment has especially helped my digital storytelling abilities over the aspects of the learning record.

Objective 2: Accessing Content, Audience, and Style of Digital Storytelling

In one of my first observations of the course: (https://computersandwriting18.slack.com/archives/GCMSFJCD9/p1536295548000100); I talk about the NFL Kickoff game bet ween the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons and how the multiple camera angles that NBC used was a great way to protray their digital storytelling. Analyzing that game and looking at each camera angle is a great example of me looking at the aspects that works and don’t work when it comes to the aspects that we have learned over the course of the semester up to this point. The main angle that caught my eye was the skycam drive during one of the Falcons drives in the first half that made me make the observation of the angles. Looking at the dimensions of Learning, this observation shows the skills and strategies dimension because it’s analyzing the skill of the Rule of thirds that we learned earlier in the semester, I looked at the angles and noticed that they had great concepts of the rule of thirds while keeping up with the movement of the play is impressive. As the eye is supposed to move with the ball during the play as NBC makes sure that they make a story out of the game as well makes sure it is visually pleasing.

Another example of accessing the content, the audience, and style of digital storytelling is the Scott Van Pelt show. (https://computersandwriting18.slack.com/archives/GCMSFJCD9/p1537763774000100)  In the Observation I talk about how Van Pelt has unique graphics and skits during the duration of the show that showcases great digital storytelling. The main skit that Van does is called Bad Beats, where it talks about the unfortunate parts of showcasing the spread. The Scott Van Pelt Show example is showing the knowledge and understanding dimension of my learning because it is analyzing the show looking at how SVP encapsulates the perfect digital storyteller as well as a great sports journalist because he shows the abilities of a storyteller when he looks at a highlight by making it his own personal type of story as that inspires me to not only create great sports articles but great digital sports pieces that encapsulate my personal interests as well as that great story. Another situation that we did that captures the skills and strategies and knowledge and understanding dimensions was reading the Creative Confidence book during the first part of the semester. That book captures what it meant to be a perfect digital storyteller throughout the duration of the book especially in Chapter one of the book.

Learning Dimensions

Learning dimension 1: Using Prior and Emerging Experiences

Using prior experience and emerging new experiences is the main dimension when you are collaborating on projects as a whole because we all have done it throughout our entire school careers. Sean and I are two guys who clicked right away because of our bond being Eagles fans. That bond helped with our chemistry in our text messages as well because we would communicate everything through texting like when should we meet to edit, what should we do during the process. And our editing meetings as well are a sign that we can communicate with each other and collaborate and gain new experiences.

Learning Dimension 2: The Creativity Dimensions of learning

This class has shown my creativity over time by not only doing collaborative works over the course of the semester but as well as implementing several techniques like creating story maps that show a lot of unique techniques that we as a class have learned over the semester. For example, the apps of Snapseed and Splice are great free apps that can help inspiring digital storytellers to create great pieces of work at the simple touch of your smart phone.

These Snapseed assignments. https://computersandwriting18.slack.com/archives/CCTSAGDSS/p1538585995000100   https://computersandwriting18.slack.com/archives/CCTSAGDSS/p1538586648000100

This assignment showed the creativity dimension of learning because even though we were analyzing the Snapseed app looking for certain details in making our photography pop more but we were also showing our creative sides as well. This assignment also showcases some of the ethics of digital storytelling because it understands that we can create anything that we want but we have to stay within the limits of the ethics that we have over the year.

In Conclusion

Overall I feel my performance in the class has had its ups and downs throughout the year, so if I were to put a grade on it it would be a B- to a C+ because I feel I could’ve done a lot better overall throughout the year especially when it came to grasping all of the concepts over the year.
