Introduction:

The Dove family is one of the oldest and most prominent families in the area. Our goal was to explore the impact that the Dove family has had on the local Harrisonburg and Rockingham County areas and explore what current influences the family carries out into the present day. While carrying out this project, we have gained a better understanding of the historical aspect of locality as well as the broader view and influence of local history. The Dove family cemeteries represent an opportunity to explore the enduring influence of early settlers on the local landscape and culture. Our aim is to delve deeper into the history of the Doves. While local family records and stories only reached as far back as Henry Dove, the first white settler in Rockingham County. We decided the best way to tell the story of the Dove family was through the lineage that connects our group member, Jacinda Dove, to Henry Dove himself, telling the story of each generation. Through this we were able to view the impact that local and national issues had upon a local American family.

The Dove family cemeteries hold significance as a repository of memories, history, and the enduring presence of the Doves in the region. The name “Doveville” reflects the strong connection between the family and the community. Furthermore, the presence of family members in Bergton and their involvement in local life make the Dove family an integral part of the area’s history.

Our project is driven by a commitment to preserving the history and memories of the Dove family and their enduring connection to the Rockingham County area. The project is built on a foundation of historical research, family stories, and access to valuable sources. It underscores the importance of locality and aims to reveal the links between the Dove family’s history and the broader scales of local, regional, and national development.

As we present our project to you, we hope that you will be able to gain a better understanding of how local history can be affected and influenced by community, and how local history derives from our own ancestry.
