Camilo Darthes and Carlos S. Damel most successful and prolific playwrights of their era in Argentine theater, together they wrote 54 plays. While they worked together, their lives were markedly different Carlos Damel was a licensed doctor of Ophthalmology, while Camilo Darthes was a successful businessman.
By working together so profusely, their work is considered by most as inseparable. They were first introduced as students and put on their first production in 1911 named La ultima escena. This play was considered to be juvenile but nonetheless was successful and played for four straight nights. Their productions were characterized by suspense but also comical.
The setting’s of their plays were primarily set in Buenos Aires, however, there were a few set in more rural areas of Argentina. Their consistent use of unfaithful wives and abandoned children have drawn some criticisms for not being representative of life in Buenos Aries, however, this did not impede the success of their work. Most of their productions were extremely well received, one example is their play Amparo which won a national prize in 1943-1944 and was played a record of over 1000 times. They were two of the most successful playwrights of their era, leaving a substantial legacy in Argentine theater.
