John Hulsey is Associate Professor of Political Science at James Madison University. Dr. Hulsey’s research and teaching focuses party politics in divided societies, state-building after civil wars, state capture, ethnopolitics, the politics of the Balkans and of Eastern Europe, the politics of empire, and the European Union.

Intelligence Analysis

Kathleen is a sociotechnical researcher and professor of Cyber Intelligence in in the Intelligence Analysis program. Her research focuses on the social environment of the Dark Web, risk and emerging technologies in national security, and crisis informatics.

Catherine Copeland

Catherine Copeland

Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication

Catherine Copeland has taught for 10 years within the Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication department at James Madison University. She co-edits The International Journal of Responsibility and eJournal of Public Policy and serves as a Faculty Fellow for the Madison Center for Civic Engagement and on the faculty cohort for “Debate Across the Curriculum.” As well as teaching “Hacking for Defense” and “Addressing Human Trafficking” this semester, she taught “Hacking for Diplomacy” in Fall 2019 and developed “Democracy Counts,” an initiative of President Alger to encourage participation for the 2020 Census.

Engineering

Steven R. Harper earned a B.S. in Engineering Physics from the University of California, Berkeley 1981 and then served in the United States Navy onboard submarines and as a Material Professional. During his career, he earned an M.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, 1988, and an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, 1994. He retired in 2002 at the rank of Commander and earned an M.S. in Business Administration, 2003, and the Ph.D. Systems and Entrepreneurial Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois. He was a postdoctoral research associate at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications and was an Assistant Professor of Management at James Madison University (JMU). He is currently an Associate Professor of Engineering at JMU.
